Letting go. Goodbye Floorball!

20 years ago I started to play Floorball. Back in a time when it was still called Unihockey in Germany. Today I went to the training for the last time. It‘s no longer a fit.

I would not have believed to practice this sport that long if you told me so back in 2004. In the vast sport offerings of my university in Ilmenau I stumbled upon Floorball and as it sounded interesting, I decided to try it out. The people were great so I kept coming back. We went to a lot of tournaments, even to Twente in the Netherlands and it was so much fun! I could not get enough of this sport for that time while studying. It would’ve been great if there would exist some league in Thuringia but there was not. So we just played for fun.

In 2009 I ended up in Hamburg and looked for a Floorball group and found one. It was a fun group, too, with lots of skilled players. Over time less and less people came so I also left this group and joined another club in Hamburg, playing in a regional league. For some years this was awesome. I scheduled my winter weekends after the league schedule but with kids and family time it became harder to fit this in.

During Corona we had to take a break and I struggled without the training as I was used to it so much. It was a fixed part of my week since so many years already. To get some movement, surfskating was a nice discovery which I still enjoy very much. From then on, Floorball already was not the number one anymore.

The final drop that made me quit was a new time for our training: I can’t manage to leave before 22:30h and it’s still an hour to drive home. With a school kid and an early alarm to get up, these short nights really dragged me down the rest of the week. But playing and the team was so fun!

Sometimes one has to recognize if something is no fit anymore. It’s hard as I love that sport a lot. Maybe I return to it one day. For now I enjoy the short walks to a Basketball group around the corner – it is also a lot of fun, even though I broke my finger the first time. I guess I have a lot to learn.
