Earth View

Earth View is a collection of the most striking and enigmatic landscapes available in Google Earth. It started with an easter egg for the Google Earth homepage and developed into an even bigger project at Ubilabs.

The Earth View Extension for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox displays a beautiful satellite image from Google Earth every time you open a new tab. More than 900.000 users discover the beauty of our planet each time they browse. To discover and even download the images, there is the Earth View Gallery. An update in 2019 add some new imagery and introduces a map view with an overview of all the places featured.

If you look closely, you can spot me in the background of this making of video:

My Role

We built a special tool to search the earth for beautiful locations that are available in great quality. We then got lost in the search and discovery of beautiful landscapes and cities.

For the Extension I developed parts of the interface and the logic, especially the preloading of the next image.
First, a Go server implemented by me was running as the backend of the Gallery. It got later refactored to Node.js to fit the tech stack at Ubilabs. The interface resembles parts of the Extension. I took especially care to make the interface as functional as possible without JavaScript.

A map showing all the places featured.
Share to various platforms.
Get a link to send or remember.
A history to access the last images in the Extension.
Quite some usage.
